Energy Saving Tips for Using Home Appliances in Summer

It’s always good to be reminded of easy, but extremely important steps we can all take to reduce energy waste during the summer.

Here are a few tips:

  • If you go on vacation and don’t plan on using your electrical appliances for an extended period of time, it is a good idea to unplug them as this will reduce power consumption. Your refrigerator should remain plugged in, but remember to turn down the thermostat.
  • Don’t keep your air conditioner temperature frigid in your home or office. Turn the thermostat up a couple of degrees and you will be saving a lot of energy during the summer.
  • Plant trees and shrubs around your air conditioner compressor and keep it out of direct sunlight. Keeping it cool allows it not to have to work harder than necessary.
  • Check your air conditioner filter every couple of weeks to make sure that it is clean and clear of debris for better air flow. Clean it well or replace filter if necessary and your unit will work better and more efficiently.

  • Don’t open your refrigerator door too frequently and don’t keep it open for extended periods of time.
  • Your refrigerator should never be too full. Gaps and spaces between items allow for better air flow and maintain the cooler temperature in appropriate balance.
  • A foot or so of open space should be left between the refrigerator and the wall to ensure proper ventilation.
  • Refrigerator should not be located next to a hot oven, stove or microwave, but should stay in a cool, well ventilated place.
  • Before being placed in refrigerator for storage, hot foods should be cooled to appropriate room temperature.
  • In order to save on energy, let your dirty clothes soak in water in your washer for twenty minutes or so to loosen the dirt.  Run washer full cycle afterwards.
  • Shorten the cycle time on your washing machine, by using more energy saving selections.
  • Dry your clothes outdoors on a line whenever you can during the summer, especially larger items like bed linens, towels, comforters and blankets.
